St ORTANAR? Derby
William Brown appears in the 1851 Census at Sudbrook, Ancaster Lincs as:-
William Brown head wid 50 Match Seller born Derby St Ortanar
with
James Brown son un 24 Tailor Master Lincs Grantham
Sarah Ann dau 3 At Home Lincs Sudbrook
His second wife Jane [Raynes] had died in 1850
He married his first wife circa 1824 at Stroxton, Lincs and two children
William and James were baptized at Grantham [of Spittlegate, Grantham]
He is there given as labourer.
He married secondly at Ancaster in 1842 [I have the Certificate] and no
father of either party is given.
I have thoroughly checked the 1841 Census and the only possible is at an
Inn in Spalding, Lincs where he is staying as a commercial traveller.
I finally cracked his second wife,s forbears when I found the other child by
his second marriage, Henry with his maternal grandfather at Welbourn, Lincs.
The above Census I first found many years ago when the only place the
then available Census was at Portugal St., London.
Does anybody with Derbyshire knowledge have thought as to what
St Ortanar may have been, perhaps taking into account an accent and the
enumerator's interpretation of it?

Could be St Alkmund or St Werburgh.

William BROWN
I would think it would be St Alkmund. That would seem to be the most likely misinterpretation by the enumerator.

Thankyou Ali and Janet.
I did not want to cloud your opinions but St Alkmund is what I think it is.
