This is a bit earlier than your dates but g grandfather MORETTI was convicted at the Old Bailey in 1858; he left Newgate 29 September 1858 when he was moved to Wakefield, arriving the following day, 30 September. He was moved again the following year, leaving Wakefield on 20 June 1859, arriving Portland on 21 June, according to the prison records. Nothing in the records I have to say how he was moved; however, it is recorded that Joseph was one of 30 prisoners moved from Wakefield to Portland that day - I would have thought that this would be too many to be moved by coach unless there were several travelling in convoy. And could a journey from Wakefield to Portland be done overnight? Seems likely to be by train.
