    Default What is a landsman?

    I've just discovered from a marriage certificate that one of my husband's ancestors was a sea captain in 1877. I've been searching the interweb hoping to find further info on him and came across this: https://www.tfoenander.com/roster.html. Alongside his name (Isaac Gibson) it says 'Landsman'. Can anyone tell me what this is? Also written is 'des. Sept 28 1865'. Does anyone know what 'des' is abbreviated from? Google has been most unhelpful with both of these queries!!
