Hi
Can anyone point me in the right direction please. Ive a wonderful surname to hunt for - yep its BROWN!
I would like to know if its possible to find out who was living at an address in Bethnal Green in 1857 - is there any way of doing this?
8 THOMAS STREET, BETHNAL GREEN
im hoping it will tell me there was a GEORGE BROWN there who was a POULTERER.
If so Im also hoping it will tell me his wife name and both birth areas.
Im sooooooooooo stumped on this gentleman, any help would be great
thanks ever so much

There's no George Brown at 8 Thomas Street, but there is a George Brown, poulterer at 1. Upper Marylebone Street with wife Sarah from Stalham, Norfolk. What was your chap's birth year?

Hi Thomasin
thanks for replying to me, I got the address from James' marriage cert, so I was hoping that was where George was living at the time of his son's marriage. I know it was a long shot. I really dont have anything more on George at all Im afraid, except of course that he was a poulterer at this time.
Thanks for info on the George you found, I will try and look into that - some how!!!
thanks again

Just relooked at James and Sophia Brown (nee Knight's) marriage cert, not only was James' address at this time 8 Thomas st, Sophia Knight was at 6 Thomas st.
6 Thomas St, Ive found in earlier research was the site of the BLACK BULL pub in 1856.
Dont know if this info will help you to help me at all?
thanks

You're right that the Black Bull was No. 6, but there were three other houses that also came under No. 6, all with two or three families in them. Not a single Knight, not even a Sophia. The nearest name to that was Sarah King! Of course, that's the 1861 census, so it looks as if they had all moved on in those four years.

Hi again
thanks for that, well Sophia Knight wouldve been married by then but seeing as theres no Knights at all in 1861 you're right they must have moved.
I cant find her father Thomas in 1861 or 1871 as yet, he was married to Mary Ann.
But still doesnt help on the Brown front - o well I'll find him one day
thanks for your help

I've tried the 1851 census, and the only James Brown with father George is at 67 Hare Street, Bethnal Green, HO107; 1542; folio?; 3.
George Brown 44 b. Spitalfield, Middx
Sarah Brown 45 b. Bethnal Green
George Brown 21 b. Bethnal Green
James Brown 20 b. Bethnal Green
The downside to this is that they ALL seem to be hand loom weavers of silk.
