    Default nurse orderly occupation

Can anyone explain to me the role of the nurse orderly occupation from ww2.

My grandmother did this. She started in the ATS as a volunteer and then became a private. Could she still have done this job as a private?

A family story I was told ( I have not confirmed it yet)
was that nurses from overseas in WWII were aliens and could not be classed as nurses or actually nurse patients. They were sometimes known as 'Nurse Orderlies' as they were only allowed to perform orderly duties, cooking, cleaning and basic patient care etc.

This included those from Southern Ireland.
