George Edward Hucker

Hi, I am looking for the birth of George Edward Hucker. He was born about 1877 in Portishead, Somerset. His mum was Eliza, born in Pembrokeshire in 1843. In the 1881 census, they were in Okehampton workhouse and she was a widow by then, and that is all I have. Any help would be greatly apprecaited.

We normally work backwards for a good reason

You'll need the marriage certificate for a number of reasons including his father's name.

These two births are registered in Clifton which is an Area of Bristol
Portishead is equaly an area close to Bristol

Quite possible that they viewed where they lived as close to Portishead but was in the Clifton regsitry district

Middle names don't match but that does happen sometimes if they have more than one.

Mum Eliza is in the Okehampton worknhouse in 1871 with three older children. No sign of a husband. Marital status W - widow?

Maybe she is unmarried and Hucker is her maiden name, especially as she has a few more children with same surname despite supposedly being a widow.

In 1871 the eldest child is Robert James born 1862.

There is a marriage in Okehampton in Dec quarter 1861 Thomas Hucker & Eliza Jane Kelly.

Well spotted, Joanna. Robert James' birth was registered at Okehampton in the March quarter of 1862.

The way forward is to obtain this birth certificate which may in turn lead to the quoted marriage.

Once the parents details have been confirmed, George's certificate can be searched for.
