1Joseph MARTIN & Maria MAIL said to be Edwards Parents..No marriage ever found for them. Rumoured the Family came from E.Grinstead, Maria perhaps from Edenbridge. (censuses) People from LDS Church have put this Family on IGI including 7 Siblings. At least one Martin Family member went to USA. As did the researcher.
2 George MARTIN & Maria MAIL in records as Edwards Parents. Was the Baptismal celebrant celebrating & got the Fathers name wrong?
3.Robert & Sophia MARTIN A researcher found this couple for my Cousin who asked. They married in Shoreditch, several children born Bermondsey. One is Ann.
None of my Gt.G'Dad Edwards Children were named Robert or Sophia, nor down thro' the Families.
A letter written in 1840 to my Gt.G'dads Brother Edward Henry (b.1833) by his "Aunt Ann" hopes he will use the presented Bible thro'out his life, etc. A very religious Lady.

Hardly proof though.
What occupation did he have. They tended to stay in families. Ag Lab will not work I know but when you need straws to grab at, anything will do.

I did a few google searches Tanners in bermondsey 1810 gave me the one above
I could not find a Tanners Association. Does anyone know of a Worshipful Guild of Tanners or some other ancient club for them.
If we can find one of the three possibles is a Tanner then we really do have a likely candidate

What a b......r
If we can get a few others to view we can have a vote. Mines with No 2
Leaving a will. I am trying to thnk of anything else.
I guees you could troll the workhouses, debtors courts, criminal courts looking for anything that could give just a minute bit of info.
Have you traced all three on the census to do a comparison.

Hi Wendy and Raffaele, I was just browsing through a book about Bermondsey at the Internet Archives,
"Bermondsey, its historic memories and associations". Clarke, Edward T.
https://www.archive.org/details/bermondseyitshis00clar
and in it the author stated that the tanners were at the beginning of the reign of Queen Ann, granted a charter for a guild but they never took up the offer, so there's no luck there I'm afraid.
Wendy I'm getting totally confused as to exactly who you're looking for (senior moments).
Still looking.
Hugh.

I do wonder if George was misnamed as Father & Husband to Maria. Mentions of George in 1841 bring up no Tanners.
No further baptisms for them either. If George was really Joseph, it would all work out nicely, with sibs who blend in & names that continued down the years.
G'Dtrs snack break over, I'm needed elsewhere. Just have to mend an error on another post.Happy Families
