18811881 census although I can see a John Grant with his mother Catherine Sheridan.
Catherine SHERIDAN Head W Female 44 Manchester, Lancashire, England Coloured Winder (C)
Mary Ann SHERIDAN Daur U Female 17 Manchester, Lancashire, England Coloured Winder
John GRANT Son U Male 25 Manchester, Lancashire, England Hydraulic Packer
James MOON Lodger U Male 25 Manchester, Lancashire, England Lithographic Printer
This would indicate John was born 1856.
1871
Name Age
Catherine Grant 40 House cook Ireland
John Grant 19
Michael Grant 17
Thomas Grant 6
This would indicate he was born 1852. - if this one is correct, he must be Patrick's son by Mary??
Ages and places of birth are inconsistant with Catherine
I am beginning to see something fishy. I don't think that 1881 census is the same two???

Hi Sue and Sue,
I think I've solved the Murray connection. Catherine Murray married David Grant in 1853 and they had a son called John Grant and then David Grant died. Catherine Grant and her son John are on the 1861 census staying with her parents Peter and Catherine Murray. Catherine Grant nee Murray went on to marry Andrew Sheridan and they had a daugher Mary Ann Sheridan but it seems to me she used her Grant name for the marriage but only used Murray on Mary Ann's birth certificate. So on the 1881 census she is Catherine Sheridan with her son John Grant and her daughter Mary Ann Sheridan. Mary Ann when on to marry Fred Broughton so in 1901 Catherine is staying with the Broughtons. Can't be 100% certain unless I order the certificates but it seems to all make sense.
I'd be really happy if these were mine because they are all sorted out but they are not.
I really think I am heading for a dead end with this one but the problem is I am obsessed now and can't leave it alone.
Best wishes,
Luzzu

Hi Sue

John GRANT Son U Male 25 Manchester, Lancashire, England Hydraulic Packer
James MOON Lodger U Male 25 Manchester, Lancashire, England Lithographic Printer
The mother of my John Grant must be either Patrick's first wife (name unknown) because I can't find the right John Grant birth or Mary Ryan.
Patrick was a widower when he married Mary Ryan so there was a first wife and it seems likely they married in Ireland. I have been unable to make progress with the Irish records because you need at least to know which county in of Ireland to start a search and I don't have a clue.
I cannot find my Catherine, John or Thomas on the 1881 census at all. I have found Michael Grant and his "wife" Margaret and their two sons, Thomas and Michael. They were lodging with the Maitland family in Peel Street and pretending to be married. They didn't marry until 1883 after they had already had 3 children. John Grant married Mary Cannon in 1883 and he is on the 1891 census in Garden Lane Salford with a young family.
There is definitely something funny going on.

This is what needs to be found. Catherine could well have 're-married'. John & Thomas could be with respective families.
Will look for that option. Pity we do not know Catherine's maiden name. We might never find her.

This could be my man.
I will email Whittington Barracks museum to see if they will give me any info.
Have been looking to see if I can pin down when Catherine Grant died and looking at the Free BMD 1888 is the most likely date.

Deaths Jun 1886
GRANT Thomas 19 Burnley 8e 153
I know this is a distance away, but that may be why we cannot find them in the census...not looking far enough, and the age fits with Thomas.
PS. Perhaps not. I've just found two the correct age in 1881 with fathers Terance & peter.
Scrub that!!Last edited by sue2white; 11-06-2009 at 5:50 PM. Reason: PS
