Don't worry too much about a few years age discrepancy on the 1841 census. The ages were rounded to the nearest 5 years I think. No doubt someone who knows exactly how they did it will correct me, but even if the people knew their age by the time it was enumerated the accuracy was lost.
I agree about his profession. This one must make the maybe pile.

How do you agree with his profession? That the one in the 1841 census as an apprentice and the one on board the ship are one in the same or that he would have taken any "job"?
Still like to find the connection with the McMechans.
