Default The elusive henry's daughter in law

Whilst waiting for the certificate for Melina Pike I have picked up the wife of Henry's son, my Gt grandfather, William Henry Cable Pike.

In 1889 he married Eliza Augusta O'Hennessey in St Saviour, Southwark
According to the family Eliza was born in Ireland and outlived WHC Pike by some 24 years and died in Orpington Kent. (not verified)

It seems Eliza's irish ancestry had more to do with the family view of her name because in the 1881 census I found the following:-

Joseph Hennessey, Head, Male, 34, Labourer, Southwark
Eliza do, wife, 29, , Newington
Eliza do, dau, 10, scholar, do
William do, son, 9, do, do
Alfred do, son, 7, do, do
    Henry do, son, 5, ,do
Benjamin do, son, 3, , do
Emily do, dau, 2, , do
    Augusta do, dau, 7m,,do

1 Little Pleasant Row between 79 and 81 East Street, Newington
    RG11 0549/110/14

    I also found a birth registration for a Joseph O'Hennessey 1869.
Eliza would have been 17 when Joseph jnr was born.

Searching all the indexes and census that I can access I cannot find a marriage (perhaps there was not one although they were probably catholic) nor can I find them on previous census returns.

What I have found was difficult because of the different treatment of the O' part of the surname. I have fund Hennessey, Ohennessey and O'Hennessey.

I guess they must have been Irish and probably came over during the potato blight but it would be nice to get them back a bit further.

Raffaele, I have loads of post it notes on my desk, where I try and search for families for members of the forum. I was just trying to tidy up and throw them away when I came across one of them that has,
Henry Pike born about 1852 in Battersea, living in Wandsworth, son of Eliza.
God knows what it refers to, I am sure I have not typed it on the forum before, it sounds like a census but I don't know which one. I thought I had better post it before I scrap it. It has got to be one of yours, though you probably have found it yourself by now.

On the other side of the note is,
Henery Pike b. 1856 Southwark, living Rotherhithe, son of Ann
Henry R. Pike, b. 1853 Norwood, living Lancs? son of John and Clarinda
Henry Thomas b. 1850 Newington, son of Samuel Witheral Pike

Now I have posted them, even though they may be of no use, my conscience is clear and I can bin 'em.

At this date, the marriage (if there was one) should have been registered, regardless of religious denomination.

    Is this any use?

A second opinion on the transcript would be useful - anyone? Ancestry has them all under HENNESSY with O as a middle initial

Mutley - Thanks but those are about Henry and we are waiting for his daughters birth cert to move on.

Finbar - Not sure about that, may not be one of mine but odd the name.

Kerrywood - What can I say. I guess thanks is the word but it does not seem adequate. I guess I have to find out how to research Ireland now. Must go an find where Ennis is.

    Thanks all

Thanks also to KatieB - I would guess crime reporter
and to Astoria - quick as ever.

Looks like he married just after the census and she died just before the next.
I tried FreeBMD and no luck on the marriage.

I wonder which newspaper he worked for, crime then law then political reporter. Looks like he could have been a career journalist.

Could it be Connected with ... [something]?

He's a law/parliamentary reporter in later census, if that helps anyone to guess. This is 1841, by the way

Raffaele, could this be the death of Peter's wife and a daughter (adjacent pages in the register)? Just a guess

    Death in childbirth?
