I noticed the image of the soldier is named "Robert Deering" . There is this one Robert Deering who was drafted into the Canadian Expeditionary Force:

The 2nd Depot Battalion Eastern Ontario Regiment would have been his unit on enlistment. He may have transferred to another unit at some point.

Oh, I didn't spot a name with the image.
I think you must have him there Adele. All seems to fit.
Those Maple Leaf badges can easily be mistaken for stars Finbar. More star-like than leaf-life even! This is the pattern for the badge here:
