    It might be easier to list the places in this area where there wasn't any mining

    Co. Durham was one of the most important areas for coal mining in the country, with hundreds of pits (including one at Westoe). There's more information about the industry at the Durham Mining Museum website (not sure if a link would be permitted, but a search engine should find it easily enough), and the relevant section of the Durham Record Office site.

    Thank you Arthur for your reply,,I looked up the 'Durham Mining-Site'
    and found all kinds as you said it's the area for 'mining',,,, however I
    only found the names for any 'killed' in a 'disaster',,, thankfully 'John
    George Clarke' not listed with them,,so he survives,,, I will now think
    to look for a 'marriage' in years ahead in that area,,,,

    Appreciate your help & suggestions,,thanks

    Kind regards;

    I've just looked at FreeBMD for marriages or deaths of John Clark(e) in Co. Durham and there were a lot of possibilities. I think first of all I'd try to find him in the 1891 and 1901 censuses in the hope that a wife's name will help in identifying a marriage, or that some other known relative is in the same household.
