Calendar change

I do not know how, when or why the calendar changed.

I have a baptism in Upholland 1731 (from the cd of the register of St Thomas) and the new year does not start till the end of March. The baptism was in January and I don't know if this will be 1731 or 1732 ???
HELP What is the system for putting such dates in my records?

What generally happens is that the year is recorded as 1731/2.

It is of course one of the problems with indexes such as the IGI where it isn't immediately clear if events are in one year, or the next.
