I did see this entry that matches your W.G. ASHLEY in the 1891 census -- living at 21 St. Albans Road in Liscard, Cheshire [please excuse the repeating text]:
Name / Age in 1891 / Birthplace / Relationship / Civil parish / County / Occupation
Ashley, George 34 Liscard, Cheshire Head Liscard Cheshire Oil Miller
Ashley, Sarah A 31 Sangall Massey, Cheshire Wife Liscard Cheshire

Hope this helps.

Tom,
There is another ASHLEY family in the 1891 census living just up the street at 27 St. Albans Street: George and Martha ASHLEY, aged 71 and 73 respectively, with their children, Martha and Samuel, 45 and 34. George was born in Woor, Salop [Shropshire] and the rest of the family were born in Cheshire. Martha is listed as a laundress while Samuel has no occupation but is noted as "Blind".
As you can see there are a couple of given names that are common to both families. Possibly, they are related which means the elder ASHLEYs could be William G. ASHLEY's grandparents. Just a possibility...
Hope this helps. If I find anything more, I'll let you know.

Hello Triish.
I thank you for your time and hard work on my behalf, I'm very grateful.
I have found a little bit more information which might be helpful.
William George Ashley married Mary, nee Shanahan. I think around 1908 or thereabouts.
The address I found is as follows.
36 Casterton Street
Admin county, Lancs.
Civil parish West Derby.
Ecc parish Edge hill, St Dunstans.
Par Boro L/pool West Derby.
As far as I can ascertain W G's father was a John Ashley, I can barely read
his occupation but I think he's a bargeman.
Like everything you dont think to ask about your deceased g/parents until
it's to late. WG was my grandfather on my mothers side and alas my parents
are long gone, and I'm in my early seventies now but none the less I aim to find out about my grandparents and further if I can.
Best Regards Tom.

Tom,
Have you seen the following family in the 1881 census [you can view it free of charge on the www.familysearch.org site]?
Name / Estimated Birth Year / Birthplace / Relationship / Residence / Occupation
Ann E. Ashley abt 1842 Dublin, Ireland Head Toxteth Park Flatman's Wife
William Ashley abt 1872 Lpool, Lancashire, England Son Toxteth Park
John Ashley abt 1876 Lpool, Lancashire, England Son Toxteth Park
Thomas Ashley abt 1878 Lpool, Lancashire, England Son Toxteth Park
Henry Ashley abt 1880 Lpool, Lancashire, England Son Toxteth Park
Source information: RG11/3638
Registration district: Toxteth Park
Sub-registration district: Toxteth Park
ED, institution, or vessel: 22

Would a Flatman be the same as a Bargeman?

William G. ASHLEY's Family?
Tom,
I think the following family may be the same as the one I gave you for 1881... It's just a guess but perhaps John is the absent head of the 1881 household [aboard a vessel somewhere?] but, by 1891, he has remarried and is living at 4 Tavistock:
Name / Age in 1891 / Birthplace / Relationship to head-of-house / Civil parish / County / Occupation
Ashley, John 49 kelser, Cheshire Head Toxteth Park Lancashire Bargeman
Ashley, Mary 44 dolfelly, Wales Wife Toxteth Park Lancashire
Ashley, Henry 11 Liverpool, Lancashire Son Toxteth Park Lancashire
Ashley, Samuel 9 Liverpool, Lancashire Son Toxteth Park Lancashire
Davies, Ernest J 8 Liverpool, Lancashire Stepson Toxteth Park Lancashire Ashley, Esther 4/12 Liverpool, Lancashire Daughter Toxteth Park Lancashire
Source information: RG12/2929
Registration district: Toxteth Park
Sub registration district: Toxteth Park
ED, institution, or vessel: 34
Folio: 123
Page: 15
There is a John ASHLEY [the same one who is 5 in the 1881 census
?] who is 15 in 1891 and is listed as an "Inmate of reformatory" aboard the vessel "Akbar"', in Cheshire.
There is a Thomas ASHLEY [the same one who is 3 in the 1881 census?] is who is 13 in 1891 and is listed as a pupil of the Everton Industrial School in Everton, Lancashire.
There is a John ASHLEY [the same one who is 49 in the 1891 census?] who was 39 in 1881 and is listed as married and is captain of the vessel "The Hope."
Let me know what you think...

Hello Trish.
Thank you once again for everything, It's hard to believe the amount of information you have gathered in such a short while on my behalf.
There is some thing I have found out from my young brother,he tells me that he has found a letter from my mother's brother saying that thier mother was born in tramore in the county of waterford Ireland. Also that thier mother's father was a Michael Shanahan.who was living in liverpool. My mother was born 1910,
and her brother was born 1908, thier names were Herbert and Eileen Ashley.
It appears that mother Mary died sometime in 1911 and eileen and herbert were sent back to tramore to be brought up by the shanahan family.
So now I will print all the info that you have so kindly found for me and try to work out my next move.
Trish would mind very much if I can keep in touch with you as I would be very grateful, thank you very much for all your help it has been much appreciated.
Best Regards Tom.
