    Default Schoolmaster 1853

Robert HOWARTH married one of my family at St John's Salford in March 1853.On the PR his occupation was given as Schoolmaster and his place of residence the Parish of Bethnal Green. How many schools were in the area at that time? Would it be an easy task to find out where he was employed?

He was born in Chorley,Lancs in about 1825. By the mid 1860's he was back in Lancs, in the Salford area.He underwent somewhat of a metamorphosis as his occuption was was now a whip maker & saddlers iromonger.

I have found the following schools in the Bethnall Green area in the 1856 Post Office Directory. No HOWARTH listed among the principals.
National Schools - District and Parochial Schools ( C of E)
    Bethnal Green Road (Boys)
Church Row, Bethnal Green Road (Boys & Girls)
Hare Street, |Bethnal Green (Boys & Girls)
Mount Street, Bethnal Green (Boys & Girls)
Old Bethnal Green Road (Boys, Girls & Infants)
St John Street, Bethnal Green (Boys only, I think)
British &amp%en Road (Boys & Girls)
Hare Street, |Bethnal Green (Boys & Girls)
Mount Street, Bethnal Green (Boys & Girls)
Old Bethnal Green Road (Boys, Girls & Infants)
St John Street, Bethnal Green (Boys only, I think)
    British & Foreign Schools - (non-denominational)
Abbey Street, Bethnal Green Road (Boys, girls & Infants)
    Sorry I can't guarantee I haven't missed some.
There were loads of private schools, but I didn't notice any in this area.

I don't know why replies always get messed up if you try to make a correction. I hope the previous one is not too confusing.
One item got missed out - another National (C of E) school -
Church Street, Bethnal Green (Boys & Girls)

I make that 10 or 11 schools which I would have thought quite a lot for such a small area. Not surprised that there are no private schools as I think this was a comparatively poor area. Interesting about Abbey St (no longer there) I wonder if my ancestors who lived in that road went to the school?
