Hi there
Can anyone please help?
My grandfather was an iron ore miner he lived up to 1937 in Carlise and Whitehaven areas then moved to Halifax to look for work??? What happened to the mining then????
I would love to know more about this type of work - sounds horrendous from what little I can recall of what he told me as a child he sadly died in 1984 and my memory is not that good - but I recall he hated it and found it difficult to talk about.
Any help appreciated.
Many thanks
Lynne

Hi Lynne - me again...
Have you read this about iron ore mining? It is specific to Cumberland.

mining
Thanks Jan
Had a look - this is great - and ties in with some census information for a lodger who was living with my relatives in the 1911 census -just found them! He was an iron ore minor not working - so must be one of the ones that had just closed down - near Cleator Moor.
Thanks will look in to this more- hoping the names of some of them might ring a bell with my own mother as her father briefly worked in a mine in cleator before moving to Halifax the month my mother was born (1936) as there was no work in cleator- so his mine must have closed too.
Regards
Lynne
