hi its me again, managed to check birth certificates of several of the names you gave me and yes it appears they belong to francis and elizabeth.[ we always wondered bout surname because my gran said her mother in law used to sweep the muck under the carpet! we never knew if she meant literally or not. now we do.] i had found three kids for them and now with yr help i have 10. i found their marriage certificate from 1838 but unfortunately i couldnot see the parents section but will keep searching. i also found them in1841 census, according to it elizabeth barr was born in scotland.
francis's parents were john mcsherrie and margaret girr but cant find them at moment but i suppose they could be wayback in 1790's, but will keep trying.
thank you once again for your help.

Well Popsy, at least you are moving in the right direction, and that is the main aim. Slowly, slowly catch a monkey comes to mind.
I had a look around the 1841 but could not locate the family under the Mc/Sherrie combination of names. By 1841 only looking for parents plus one child, becomes more difficult. You say you found them and that Elizabeth Barr was born in Scotland? Under what surname, and where, did you find the family in the 1841? Just curious.
Happy hunting and enjoy the search.

Whilst looking for where you found them I found this entry in the 1841
F McSherrey/25/Ag Lab/Kirkcudbrightshire, Scotland
Elizabeth McSherrey/20/Kirkcudbrightshire, Scotland
Margt McSherrey/1/Kirkcudbrightshire, Scotland
Source: 1841/871/Kirkcudbright/Stokerton Cottage/ED 4A/Page 2/Line 930
With the rounding down of ages in 1841 census, the ages match.

Annie Bennett, daughter of Margaret McSherry
I am researching Bennet(t) genealogy in the general area of Tongland, Kirkcudbrightshire. Has anyone determined who the father of Annie Bennett is? I see that her father's name is not provided on her birth registration. It would be interesting to solve this mystery.

Annie Bennett of Rerrick
Many thanks, for the 1901 census info, Rod. Very often in Scotland in that era, a child born out of wedlock used the father's surname, so I am going on that assumption. (My own great-grandmother, born in this same part of Scotland in 1856 used her father's surname, whose name appears on her marriage registration.) There are several Bennetts in my extended family who lived around Rerrick, Tongland, etc., who might have been her father. But a little more information on her mother's life around the time Annie was born would be helpful. Perhaps Popsy21 can help in that regard?
