Default England & Wales Christening Records, 1530-190

In Ancestry's England & Wales Christening Records, 1530-1906 I'm having trouble finding any of my ancestors. Is this database finished or just incredibly specialised?
    Grateful for any help.
    With best wishes,

I have a subscription to Ancestry, but it doesn't cover those records. In fact I wasn't even aware that they were there! I usually just do a general search first using the name and dob, which should bring up all the records they have.

Have you tried using Hugh Wallis's site (free)?https://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb....tchNumbers.htm

I can't see them having a database containing every christening record over such a huge date range for such a big area. I mean, I'd be amazed if they had all those records digitised for just one town, let alone the whole of England and Wales.

Edit - according to the description: This database contains information extracted from birth and christening records from various counties in England and Wales. The records date from 1530 to 1906. The records included in this database do not represent all localities in England and Wales and for any given area, coverage (both records within a year and total year range) may not be complete. Some parishes and counties are more complete than others.

If you search John Smith, there are around 6000 results, many of which are aliases or have John as the middle name. If you think about the number of John Smiths who must have been born in that period, in that area, that gives you an idea of how incomplete this database is.

It's just the British Isles Vital Records Index (2nd edition), as issued by the Mormon Church (LDS) on CD. The marriages are there too. The coverage as regards parishes and dates is patchy, to say the least. This thread refers.

I too have been looking at the recently added Christening results for England & Wales. I have an enormous number of ancestors in Northumberland and Durham - not one is logged as yet. I expect that, as usual they have started in London and the Home Counties and the North will be last as is often the case with records to be added on line.
If I am mistaken, I would welcome other information concerning this.

    Hi judilawton,

Ancestry do have some Northern parish records. They have West Yorkshire original images copied from church registers and it's been a boon to me for my research; there's also the same for Liverpool. Unfortunately for you I don't think they have the areas you are interested in, maybe they will? Are you aware the 'family search' website has original images for Durham Bishops Transcripts? Here's a link............ https://familysearch.org/search/coll...ection/1309819

I always forget that Ancestry have that database; probably because on the few occasions when I have remembered and looked at it, I've never found anything useful.

I usually start with FreeREG https://freereg.
rootsweb.com/ (make sure you get the full stop after reg when copy-and pasting)
as you can check the coverage for individual parishes and dates.
    Then Familysearch https://www.familysearch.org/search/...INGDOM_IRELAND
There are quite a lot of images for records in Durham and Northumberland. To search for transcribed records you would need to search under the broader titles of England Births and christenings/marriages/deaths and burials as appropriate.
    Genuki https://www.
genuki.org.uk/big/ can also be very useful as information given on the individual county pages may lead you to specific databases for that county or parishes.

The real issue is that there are lots of sites that need to be looked at, and even then if you search them all, there may still be records that have not been put on line. There is no one site that anyone can look at and find out where all the different registers are.

In addition to the sites that have been listed you also need to look at:

    Find my past - https://www.
    findmypast.co.uk
    BMD Registers - https://www.
    bmdregisters.co.uk/

Both are pay to view sites.

I have been looking at my welsh ancestors recently and find that Find my past tends to have estbalished church records whilst BMD Registers tend to be the non-conformist ones. Whilst Family search will list these out you generally can't look at the original registers, which of course can have additional information.

What I find particularly irritating is that there is no accurate up to date listing on each site of their actual holdings.
