Hello,
Has anyone ever heard of Maurice Howard Studios in Birmingham?
I have a photo that was taken by him that looks to be around 1904, I have scoured various websites but cannot find anything about him.

There is no Maurice Howard studios listed in the 1900,1904,1908 or 1912 Kelly's Directory for Birmingham. Nor is Maurice Howard listed in the commercial or private resident sections of these directories.
In the 1904 directory there is:
Howard, Thomas Cecil, 1 Vauxhall grove & 133 Vauxhall road.photographer. He is the only Howard photographer listed in those years, and appears to have taken over the studios of Chas Whitehouse, photographer, who is at these addresses in 1900. By 1908 he has disappeared, and the addresses are no longer photographers

There is also some information in this thread including the comment:
"Maurice Howard Studios, modern portraiture 139 Digbeth and 16a Martineau Street. Both are in Birmingham".
I have checked Kelly's Directory of Warwickshire for 1940 and there are no photographers recorded at the above addresses nor is there a Maurice Howard in the residential section.

I was just Googling for Maurice Howard Studios, having found the name on the back of an old family photo, and I found this thead.
I can add a little to the story as my photo shows my grandmother with my father and uncle. From the apparent ages of the boys, the photo is dated around 1933. Martineau St was in Birmingham, running up the hill from Dale End to Corporation St. About here on Streetmap:

As an aid to identification, the photo shows a bit of a backdrop scene on a cloth drape, which might appear in other people's photos - I've posted the photo at:

Just found one more interesting link to Maurice Howard Studios on Flickr's Forgotten Faces - with the same backdrop, but in better condition:

Hi Genie60, he's not in this list but maybe some of your other photos have been taken by someone on this page.
Good luck,

I have a portrait of my Aunt taken by Maurice Howard 16a Martineau Street, Birmingham. I estimate it was taken in 1933. Meanwhile I'm just starting a search on any info on him

In my earlier post re Birmingham Kellys directories I only looked around 1904, and soemhow missed later posts suggesting a later date. Going later in Kellys I get:
1921 and 1924 No Maurice Howard
1932 -1933 Maurice Howard, photographer , 139 Digbeth
1936 No Maurice Howard
1932 Nova Portraits, photographers, 16 Martineau St. (but gone by 1933)

on the bottom of the portrait it reads "Maurice Howard 16a Martineau St, Birmingham" the date 1933 is an estimated date when taken. As Digbeth is close to Martineau (which no longer exists) I'm thinking there is a connection which has been lost. Still looking for whatever existed
