Many thanks. OK marriage cert: Father Richard Hall (Bricklayer?) Is that a printing term? for that period or do they mean, in building, as we understand it? Edward Coomes (Gardener). St. Thomas Church Edmonton. Thos 30 Caroline 32. Guess my best bet now to find his correct christening/birth records would be to look at the same church? Still the only link for this man, then forward (backwards)to his father and mother!!!!!

Bricklayer - someone employed laying bricks in the buidling industry.

Is this from the marriage certificate for..........

Thomas HALL died Nov 1895 recorded EdmontonMiddx. Married 30th May1852 to Caroline Coomes, recorded Edmonton Middx
If so, and he is recorded as aged 30 can you:

    1) Identify Thomas in the 1841 census

    2) Can you identify a Richard HALL , bricklayer in the 1841/1851 census returns?

    3) As Thomas was born prior to the start of civil registration, you will not be able to obtain a birth certificate (except in certain circumstances where a father was in the army). So, you will need to use parish registers which record baptisms to locate his parent's names (his mother's maiden name may, or may not be recorded depending on the date of baptism and cleric for the parish).

If your chap was consistently shown born in one place in census returns, then in your shoes I would be looking at the parish(es) for that place.
