Hi Elizabeth
I assume the above info was from the 1881 census? I have found James Gardiner bapt 23 Apr 1837 Ewhurst Sussex parents Stephen and Lucy Gardiner C148041 on the IGI.
I also found James Gardiner with wife Ann on the 1871 census if you would like the image let me know

Hi Annie
I only joined this morning and this is the first time I have ever taken part in a forum and already a result!
Thank you so much for your prompt reply which seems to be the business. I have checked out the 1871 census and now have the image - many thanks

1841 Ewehurst
Hi there Elizabeth
Just looked on the 1841 census for Ewehurst for your James Gardener with the following result:-
HO107/ 1109/ 10 - Dag Lane, Ewehurst
Gardener Shadrack, 60, Ag Lab
........... Maria, 65
........... Edward, 20
........... Martha, 20
........... James, 3
All born in the county of Sussex.
Looks like he was staying with grandparents as niether Lucy or Stephen are listed and they are not in Ewehurst either.

Gardeners in Ewhurst 1841 look-up
Hi Chris
I too am interested in Gardeners in Ewhurst. Could I perhaps aska further lookup. I believe James Gardener b. 1838 was actually James Crouch Gardener, son of James Gardener and Dorcas Crouch. I cannot find them at all on the 1851 Census; perhaps they are elsewhere in Ewhurst in 1841. Could you perhaps try to look for them? I would be most grateful.
Regards
Christopher Warren

I live in Australia and am a decendant of Stephen Gardner of Sussex.
I am trying to find more information....
He arrived in Australia in 1834.

James Crouch Gardner was the illegitimate son of Martha Gardner. The information is now on the IGI

Extra!
I believe he may be the James who married Ann and lived in Norwood.
The James who was son of Stephen & Lucy emigrated to Australia a year after his birth.
Martha & Stephen were siblings - two of the many children of Shadrach Gardiner and Maria AKA Martha.
