Thanks Ann for the support. But.......
since Hughar suggested 'Egg merchant', I have to say I'm inclined to agree with that. If you look at what I took as a 'P' it is actually written as a backward 'P' and doesn't look like the 'P' in Parish which has been written twice.
But the 'backward P' bit does fit with the first bit of the 'M's on the page.

It has to be Egg Merchant now. I've officially Written it Down so it must be so.

I have only just seen this and am inclined to agree with Pam's initial thoughts of it being Congregational Preacher. (Sorry, Pipsqueak )
However, have you found the chap in the censuses 'fore and aft'? If so, are there any clues there?

I thought about the census too Jan and had a quick look to see if I could find Mr Frier (or a variant spelling) in 1851 but with not much to go on (except looking for someone to do with eggs or preaching ) I didn't have any luck - but it was a very quick look.
Best wishes

I back Egg Merchant - the first letter looks the same to me as the other Ms on the page - plenty of examples, Mary x 2, Middleton x 2, & mark.
This is not the original entry, but a copy done by the registrar, or more likely his clerk, to be sent to the head office. On the original the bride and groom have signed with their own signatures.
By the way, an egg merchant would have to literate to be able to handle the orders.

I'm back after a week's holiday - so sorry to keep you all waiting. I'm glad dietabix had a good laugh!
I had tried to find the Egg Poacher on the census but it is hard to know which Frier is which (or whether he is a Friar or in fact, a fryer!). I like the look of Geoffers' census lookups - Mr 1861 would have had to have been 47 and his wife 45 at the time of Mary Ann's birth.
Interestingly, all my Frier finds take me back to Ringland so i'd like to study Ringland parish records.
Thanks for the input! It's truly appreciated
