Can anyone please help me read my great-great-great-grandfather's occupation? It might help to know he was from Norwich, but don't know if at this time (1857) he lived in Norwich or London. This is from his daughter's London marriage certificate.

Certainly looks like Egg Poacher
Could he have been a Preacher of some sort?
Not found him in a census that gives a clue?

The only words I could find that end in 'gg' are here

I can't be certain of him in the census because I can't find him or his daughter prior to her marriage. The only men I have found with the same name say Ag. Lab. which leads me back to Eggs again! If not for the frst letter of the secon word, I think it could say something Preacher, but the other P's on the document look like P's
I wonder if it is somethig like Cgg. Irosher or Cgg. Iraecher. Of course neither of those make sense either!

The dot might mean an abbreviation though. That list doesn't seem to match anything. I have also been looking at Victorian Occupations for inspiration, but not found any yet.

Any chance we could see the rest of the certificate to compare handwriting?
Although agree it does look like 'preacher', I'm not sure that first letter is a 'p', but I'm quite willing to admit I could be wrong.

Congregationalist Preacher?
If so, not surprised they shortened it as I had a job to spell it.

From Index of Old Occupations
Eggler / Egg Factor = Egg / poultry dealer
or
Pleacher / Plasher / Platcher / Plaicher = Hedge layer. A skilled job
maybe what looks like 'Egg' is a garbled version of 'hedge' - just a thought!!

Looks a bit like Egg Breaker to me..... Something in a baker's, perhaps? Or didn't they use eggs in some non-food processes as well?

Those were some interesting ideas. My husband also suggested Congregational Preacher. Possible.
