I have their marriage and they are on the 1841 census. They have 2 children christened at Manchester Cathedral, Richard 2 Dec 1841 and Mary Letitia 28 March 1844. After that they disappear off the map. I have checked ancestry and they are not on the census. The only likely one someone looked at and decided it was not "Joseph". Can anyone help, please.
Thanks Jen

Kay family
Have you tried checking the census just using the mothers name or a childs name ? Did you also look at HAY or variations of KAY such as BAY etc.
All my best in your search

I have looked for all the children's names but as you know the 1851 census is missing for that area so 1861 is the first. I found a couple of possibilities but one, a Joseph tuned out not to be a Joseph but an Isabella! I also found a Hannah but the children with her could not have been hers. Maybe they died or went overseas. I have not looked for variations on Kay.

There is a Hannah Kay in 1861, she is a Cotton Weaver age 35 born Wigan. They are living in Salford.
With her is Daughter Mary age 16 born Manchester,
Sons William age 14 and John age 10
Unfortunately not a Joseph or Richard living with them that night.

A Joseph Kay death was registered in Sep 1850 in Manchester
20/463
If this is husband to the above Hannah then he died while she was expecting John
There are several Richard Kay deaths registered btween 1841 and 1851.Last edited by Mutley; 17-04-2008 at 12:49 PM. Reason: added a bit

My Hannah was born in Manchester and christened 1806. it looks as though her husnband died and I must now look for her remarrying(will it show her maiden name of Knowles?) or alone in 1861. Opens up a new avenue.
Thanks for the searches.
