    Default Relationship to Head

Is anyone able to help please?
On the 1851 census for Bury Lancs Ref HO107 2215 323 52 my ancestor Joseph Howarth and his wife Mary have a son Robert living with them. Also shown is William Howarth - relationship VB Head?

Am I misreading this? If not does anyone have any idea what it may mean?

    Thank you for any assistance.

It certainly says VB Head - don't know what it means though!

Do you know what relation William actually was to Joseph?

    Hi Sue

No idea! He doesn't appear with the family on any other census. I though B may stand for brother but the other letter definitely appears to be "V".

    Thanks for checking anyway.

I checked a couple of pages before and after this. On the previous page, it's recorded twice - in each case, the person against whose name this has been written is older than the person enumerated as "Head".

So, I was wondering if it stood for something like V~~~~ Birth

William (VB) was younger than Joseph!

Two pages previously someone has been recorded as W Sister Unm, which presumably means Wife's Sister

In the case on the previous page the two men could be brothers, so I think the B must stand for brother. Could it be some phrase meaning Blood Brother?

Visiting brother - a stroke of genius or just years of lateral thinking? I LIKE this one

    Many thanks
