Lightbulb Lost Lancashire Boud (Bowd) family

I have found my grandmothers family in the 1901 census for Bolton Lancashire but cannot find the family before that year. I do not know whether the records were destroyed but it is very strange not to find any of them.
The name can also be spelled Bowd which is the case in the 1901 census. My grandmother was Mary Elizabeth Boud
    Father Thomas Boud
    Mother unknown
    Older brother William Boud
    Younger brother Thomas H Boud
    Sister Margaret

They lived at 68 Kay Street
    Bolton Lancashire

Can anyone assist in finding the family before 1901 and also my great grandmother.

In case anyone is trying to search on Ancestry, they are actually indexed as BOUD and the 1901 entry can be found at
    RG13; Piece: 3618; Folio: 136; Page: 33

A preliminary search of 1891 hasn't revealed them yet but it may help searchers to know that Thomas senior (widower) was supposedly 44 in 1901 and born in Bradford, Yorkshire.

Of the children William (18) was born in Redditch, Thomas (16) in Denton, Lancs and Mary (9) and Margaret (6) in Bolton

I think I may have them in 1881 from Family Search, mis transcribed as BOND, note that Thomas is b Bradford LANCS, Manchester area.Ties in with later birth of son Thomas in Denton.

... and Birdlip's discovery ties in with this:

    Marriages Jun 1877
    Barrett Esther Chorlton 8c 767
    BOUD Thomas Chorlton 8c 767

    Warburton Hannah Chorlton 8c 767
    Wood George Chorlton 8c 767

However, if Thomas was a widower in 1901, then this can't be right, although it fits with her age:

    Deaths Mar 1908
    Boud Esther 48 Bolton 8c 222

    Aha...it WAS them. Checked for the marriage on freebmd;

Jun 1877 Thomas BOUD Chorlton 8c 767, and on the same page...ESTHER BARRETT!

    Great minds think alike!

However, I've just copped a varda at the 1901 census again and I'm pretty certain that Thomas is recorded as married - not widowed. But, I have yet to find any trace of Esther in 1901...

In 1891 there's an Esther BOUD, aged 31 born Manchester, living as a lodger and working as a cotton weaver in Manchester at

Well, I don't know what was going on with this family, but Esther must have popped back from time to time to help produce more children

Have found Thomas & co (again recorded as Bond) in 1891 but without Esther:

    RG 12/3121/page 30

47 Milk Street, Great Bolton, Lancashire

Thomas Bond, Head, M *, 34, Iron Plainer, b Bradford, Lancashire
Frederick J Bond, son, 11, Scholar, b Manchester
Wm Bond, son, 8, Scholar, b Manchester
Thos Bond, son, 7, Scholar - no place of birth recorded.

    * = now, there's a squiggle over the M for married but I can't work out what it is...
