Hello,
Further to my request for the lookup in Hindon PRs today, I thought I would post what I have now got on this family in the hope that someone can get me further back…
James HARDING was born abt 1800 in Hindon, Wilts (from census returns) and there is a christening 01 Mar 1800 at Hindon, son of James and Ann HARDING, which looks good.
He can be found in 1841, 1851 and 1861 in London working as a Tailor. He died 06 Jan 1875 at Caterham Asylum, Surrey.
1841: HO107/689/8; Folio: 28; Page: 1;
1851: HO107/1517; Folio: 237; Page: 1; Schedule: 7;
1861: RG9/193; Folio: 79; Page: 11; Schedule: 56; (misrecorded as Rearding)
1871: RG10/838; Folio: 118; Page: 4; Line: 1;
My problem has been working back from his birth in 1800…
There is a marriage for James HARDING and Ann DAY on the 25 Dec 1798 at Fonthill Gifford, Wiltshire. This seems likely to be his parents as this is the neighbouring parish.
There are also other children of James and Ann, christened at Hindon:
14 Oct 1810, Richard s. James and Ann
22 Dec 1812, Francis s. James and Ann
08 Dec 1814, Ann d. James (a tailor) and Ann
03 Jun 1816, Stephen s. James (a tailor) and Ann
28 Jan 1821, Priscilla d. James (a tailor) and Ann
However there is a 10-year gap between the birth of James in 1800 and Richard in 1810, which seems unlikely. I guess they could have moved to a different parish? Or are there nonconformist records for Hindon.
Of these children, I can only find Richard (married to Leah) in later census and he had no children of his own.
Looking on the census, I think this is James and Ann in 1841 and 1851, based on occupation and place of birth. This would however make James rather young to be married in 1798…have I got two different families muddled up?
1841: HO107/1173/3; Folio: 38; Page: 8;
1851: HO107/1843; Folio: 331; Page: 9; Schedule: 31;
Another problem is that the family on the census has a daughter Mary b1814 which doesn’t tie up with the christening for Ann. I don’t have access to Hindon parish registers and so perhaps someone who does could look and see if there is a Mary in 1814.
Based on the census, James HARDING should be born abt 1784 in Hindon and Ann DAY in 1779, can someone see if they are recorded in the Hindon registers?
I have checked the 1851 census and there are other HARDINGs born in Hindon in the 1770s/1780s which I imagine will link in as well (perhaps they are James' brothers...):
Thomas (abt 1775)
Francis (abt 1780)
William (abt 1788)
Sorry for such a long post, but I am really keen to link all these HARDINGs together and at the same time be sure I have the right family for ‘my’ James born 1800.
Thanks in advance for any help,
Greg

Thanks
Hi Chris,
Thanks for this. I think they probably will tie in to my family, but will need to do more work to try and confirm the links.
