A quick update. The certificate I ordered for Mary Ann SIMKIN did not match with father or suspected mother's name. I have ordered another certificate today, and hopefully, this one will prove positive, but it will be next week-end before I can post any details.

Which cert did you receive, what were the parents names, just out of interest.

Sue, looks like the 'speculation' was true. Received the following certificate this morning.
GRO Ref: 1840/Mar/Thingoe/Vol 13/Page 471/Entry 347
Mary Ann SIMKIN
Born: 13 Dec 1839 @ Chevington
Father: James SIMKIN (Thatcher)
Mother: Maria SIMKIN formerly DOWNS
Regd: By father from Chevington on 4 Jan 1840
Will now have to order the 'next' certificates to establish who was the mother for James (b. 1842) due to Maria'a death in 1841. Will keep you posted.

Once again Sue your 'speculation' is spot on.
Just received the birth certificate for James Downs SIMKIN.
GRO Ref: 1841/Jun/Thingoe/ Vol 13/ Page 491/Entry 82
Born: 14 March 1841 at Chevington.
Father: James SIMKIN (Thatcher)
Mother: Maria SIMKIN formerly DOWNS
Redg: Mark of 'x' James SIMKIN, father, Chevington 10 Apr 1841
It is obvious where James second name came from and probably the reasoning behind him being given that name was her untimely death. It would appear that Maria died either during or shortly after giving birth to James. He was born on 14 March and Maria was buried on 19 March 1841. My thoughts only.
That more or less proves that Emily IVES was the mother for the third child Lela, born 1847, and the remaining 5 children born after 1847. It also explains the 6 year gap between the second and third child as she did not marry James until 1845. I was thinking along the lines of possible infant deaths for those 6 years.
I will have to search the 1841 census for James Downs SIMKIN. He would have been about 3 months old when it was taken and he was NOT recorded living with his father James or elder sister Mary Ann in the 1841 at Chevington.

I did not think that James (the father) would let James (his son) be that far away just after the death of his wife Maria.
I searched the 1841 Chevington census and found a James SIMKIN, 3 month's old, living at the White House, Chevington with James and Sophia MAYHEW and their 5 children. (HO107, Piece 1037, Book 3, ED 5, Folio 6, Page 4)
Sophia is an Aunt to James (the son) being the eldest sister to James (the father). Their parents are Robert SIMKIN and Sophia RANSOME.
By 1861 James (the son) is back home living with James (the father) and his stepmother Emily IVES and 7 brothers/sisters from both marriages.

Everything is becoming untangled. I did glimpse the fiche at Suffolk Record Office today of Chevington, baptisms c 1840ish, but to be honest they were rather faint so gave up in the end.
So will you get Marias death cert, most probably she did die in childbirth. Getting you to spend your money. LOL
