    Thumbs up

What a star you are Suffolk Sue, and thank you very much indeed.

I did notice in the 1841 census that 'Amey the Housekeeper' was listed after Mary Ann, the first child, and wondered if that was the case.

I wonder if James was married before, from Suffolk Marriage Index.

    James SIMKIN of Chevington
    Maria DOWNS

29th September, 1836 - Bury St. Edmunds, St. Mary

    and the following burial

    Maria
    SIMKIN
Date of burial: 19 Mar 1841
    Age at death: 35
    Calculated year of birth: 1806
    Place of burial: Chevington
    All Saints

    All speculation I'm afraid.

There is a William and Amy Howe in Chevington in the 1851 census, have found the following marriage.

    Amy Simpkin
    1847
    Dec qtr.
    District: Thingoe
    County: Suffolk
    Volume: 13
    Page: 1251

    William Howe

    =======

So possibily the "housekeeper" Amey in 1841 could be James sister.

Once again Sue, thank for your help and 'speculation', which is a distinct possibility. But first things first. I have just ordered the birth cert for Mary Ann SIMKIN and that should confirm her mother’s name. If her mothers name is Maria DOWNS, I will then have to order birth certificates for the next two children James b.1841 and Lela b.1848, because Maria died in 1841. James, the second child’s birth, was registered in Thingoe/13/491 in Jun 1841. If this was a late registration, the possibility exists that Maria DOWNS was the mother of the first two children, and Emily IVES the mother of the remaining children. Hopefully the certificates should prove the ‘speculation’ one way or another.

Until the certificate arrives I will start the search for the parents of James SIMKIN. A tree on Ancestry UK indicates Robert SIMKIN b. 1775 d. 1846 Bury St Edmunds and Sophia RANSOM b.1751 Chevington d. 1866 Newmarket are possibilities. Any help in this direction would be most appreciated and very welcome indeed.

    Happy hunting.

Well, if Robert and Sophia do turn out to be James parents, the following was on Boyds marriage index.

    1804 / SIMKIN ROB / RANSOM SOPHIA / CHEVINGTON / SUFFOLK

Armed with Robert & Sophia I went back into 1841 census for Chevington and found:

    Robert SIMKIN 65, Farmer
    Sophia 60
    John 25
    Joseph 20
    Harriet 15
    Ann 15
    Mary Ann TWENETT(?) 25
    All born in county.

Checked family search and found all the children above, plus James, with parents of Robert SIMKIN and Sophia RANSOM(E)

    James b. 13 Jan 1811 bapt. 10 Feb 1811 Chevington
John bapt. 19 Oct 1815 Suffolk County Bts
Joseph bapt. 29 Sep 1818 Chevington
    Harriet b. 10 Jun 1821 bapt. 21 Jan 1822 Chedburgh
    Ann b. 26 May 1824 bapt. 03 Jul 1824 Chevington

I think I have some more children to uncover if marriage was in 1804, which is looking good to me. Off to rearch for more children and also look in 1851/61 for Robert, Sophia and kids, but not holding my breath with Robert at 65+ and Sophia 60+.

This little gigsaw has a few more pieces yet to come out the box. But it is fun trying to find the little blighters
