I can't really make out what her new surname is on the 1871 census.

Do you think it might be this marriage?

    Marriages Dec 1866

    DEAMAN Thomas Chelsea 1a 359
    Whelan Catherine Chelsea 1a 359

If so and if her details are shown properly, the marriage cert would be just the ticket

Thanks again for the lead peter. I have obtained a copy of the widow Catherine Whelan's marriage cert. It gives her Fathers name as Thomas Fitzgerald. I know her first husband Martin Whelan and Catherine came from Ireland. I will see if I can find some info on their children, that might give her Irish place of birth
    kind regards

    Hi Charlie,
I think the Catherine you are referring to is Catherine Fitzgerald born in Cork in 1821.If you want birth certificates I think you can register online at the General Records Office and apply for one there. Last time i used it it cost about a tenner.Your ancestor Thomas was married to Annie McHale who later married Martin Hansbury the brother of my great-grandfather Richard Hansbury.

    Hope this helps,

    Paul
