Hello,

One of my great grandfathers was made a Special Constable in the First World War. He would have been aged 40 to 44 during this time.

The way I've understood it, Special Constables were set up through an Act of Parliament in order to protect the water supply. As Laundry work was a reserved occupation, and he was a Laundry owner, this seems rather apt.

Any suggestions as to how I might find out a bit more about the Specials during this time, specifically any records for St Albans?

I've visited the FHS at Hertford, but they were unable to help.

Thanks in anticipation.
