    Default Dissenting Minister

    Hi

    On my 2x gt grandfather's marriage certificate it gives his fathers occuptation as 'Dissenting Minister' Anyone got any idea's where to start looking for anything like this. The family were from Nottingham.

    What exactly are you hoping to find out?

    You say 'marriage certificate' so it must be after 1837. Therefore a combination of census entries and city/county directories is likely to identify what his specific non-conformist sect was. You could then take it further with the records of that particular organisation.

    Thanks very much both for the reply and for the link.

    A Census search has turn up nothing for this chap but I hadn't thought about looking through old directories. I will have a look on the HD site to see if I can find him.

    I have a similar relative - though I thought it said "Disserting" Minister - William Atherton - HO 107/1312/4.

    Any help appreciated in describing what he did!

    Dissenting essentially means non conformist. See this research guide (you may need to scroll down to #6)

    According to White's 1847 directory, Wm Atherton was an Independent minister (capital I!)
