    Hello,

In the 1920 census we find George and Rose Burden living in Glen Cove, Nassau County, New York.

The census for this area was taken on 13-Jan-1920.

George, Rose, and 2 of their daughters -- Ethel and Violet -- immigrated in 1914. Their youngest daughter, Doris, was born in New York.

George, age 45, is a watchman for a private estate.

Rose is 35 years old and not employed outside of the home.

    Their daughters:

    1. Ethel, age 14, is attending school.
    2. Violet, age 12, is attending school.
    3. Doris, age 4 years and 4 months, is at home, being too young to attend school.

We find that the family rents their home.

    Off to check 1930.

The 1930 census for the area in which George and Rose (now listed as "Rosina") live was taken in May of 1930. The family is living in the same place.

We find that they now own their own home and it is valued at 5,000 dollars. They also own a radio set (this was one of the questions on the 1930 census).

George is now 58 years old and still works as a watchman for a private estate. He was 34 years old at the time of his first marriage.

Rosina is 48 years old and was age 24 at the time of her first marriage.

Ethel no longer lives at home so we can assume that she has married and lives elsewhere.

Violet is 22 years old and a stenographer for a shoe retailer.

Doris is 14 years old and in school.

Immigration records for the Burdens exist at www.ellisisland.org. They will ask you to register, but there is no fee to view the records.

Rosina Mary Burden, Ethel Florence Burden, and Violet Rosina Burden arrived at Ellis Island 5-Aug-1914 on the ship Olympic. The port of departure was Southampton and their last residence was London.

Albert George Burden arrived about a year earlier on 28-Aug-1913 on the ship Majestic. Again, the port of departure was Southampton and his last residence was London.
