Between 1851 and 1881 my G grandfather moved from Fenton to Madeley and then to Wolverhampton.He was an engine driver.Could anyone give me any advice as to what company he may have worked for and whether any records are likely to exist

TNA have some railway records; read their guidance leaflet here: https://www.nationalarchives.gov.uk/c...sLeafletID=124 which also gives some guidance on other repositories that might have records.
I don't know what company operated in that area so can't say whether TNA have anything relevant to your query or not.

Railway families
You might like to try the Railway families FHS. Their past magazines are available at the Geneological society. They cover different companies and give details of the records that are available complete with references etc.
My guess for what it is worth is that you are probably looking at the GWR but LMS is a possibility.
