Isabella Thompson married Rowland Nicholson at St Cuthbert, Carlisle in 1831. He died in 1835. In 1841 census she was running the White Hart Inn in Carlisle, and was still there in 51 and 61. She died in 1866.
Trying to find out her maiden name as we suspect she was a widow when she married Rowland Nicholson.
In 1841 she had two Thompson children with her, Andrew and Mary, as well as two Nicholson ones, Rowland and John. Mary had gone in 1851 but Andrew, Rowland and John were still there, as well as a niece Isabella Andrew. 1851 census gives her birthplace as Kirklinton.
From the IGI we found Isabella Andrew was the daughter of John Andrew and Mabel Coates. Mabel was born at Kirklinton, daughter of George Coates and Mary Hogg. The IGI also shows an Isabella Coates born at Kirklinton to the same parents in 1802, which fits with the age of Isabella Nicholson in 1851 and 1861 census.
From this we are fairly certain Isabella Thompson was Isabella Coates. No Coates-Thompson marriages on the IGI.
Anyone come across this lady or her family in their research. A descendant here in NZ is very keen in finding out about her.
