    Red face Warehouse assisiant 1921

On my granddad's birth certificate in 1921 his mother's occupation is stated as a 'warehouse assistant'.
You must forgive my ignorance, but at that time what type of establishment would she have been working for?
In this commercial world of today you have warehouses for everything. Would it have been connected to a shop back then? A family run business?

    Any ideas please?!

    Exactly the same as today.

Perhaps I ought to add the proviso that 'warehouse' in those days would not have meant a large retail outlet!
