Has anyone found the Fletcher family in Combwich, Somerset. Robert Fletcher was born in Combwich and married and Elizabeth. I have one known child Adelaide who was baptised 1836 in Otterhampton (now part of the same parish as Combwich). The 1871 shows only Elizabeth in Combwich and Roberts occupation is given as Captain not at home. Also in 1871 Adelaide is living at Barnards Farm, Sidbury (now Sid Valley Hotel) where she is a housekeeper. She later married the son of the house William Henry Moore. On her marriage certificate in 1872 her fathers occupation is given as Master Mariner (deceased). Still don't know how or where he died. Would be great to hear from anyone with connections to this family.

Alison,
The FLETCHERs in 1851...
Address: Bristol Road, Puriton, Somerset
HO107/1925 Folio 289 Page 40
Elizabeth FLETCHER Head Widow 36 Dress Maker [born] Som Puriton
Henrietta " Daur Un 18 " " Combwitch [sic]
Mary Jane " " Un 16 " " Puriton
Robert Son Un 12 Appr to Attorney " Combwitch [sic]
Thomas " Un 7 Scholar " Bridgwater
Hugh WRIGHT Lodger Un 25 Steam Engine Fitter York Hull
So, you can probably assume that Elizabeth's husband, Robert, died before 1851. There is a death record for a Robert FLETCHER in the September quarter of 1838 in Bridgwater [Volume 10 Page 334] but note that this is some 6 years before the birth of Thomas.
Also worth noting is the lodger's surname. It seems likely that one of the daughters married Hugh WRIGHT and their daughter is the Anne E. WRIGHT on the 1861 census.
But where's Adelaide? She would be about 14. Perhaps she is in service or with relatives elsewhere.

Thanks for letting me know about this Leslie. What are the chances of finding a family bible on ebay. I have sent off my payment. I wonder if that has happened to anyone else. The names are definately in my family tree. I will be eternally grateful to you for finding this.
Regards
Alison

Here is the ebook on Robert Fletcher.
It took me a while but I was able to find my great grandmother's name in the book.

My book that I have was printed in 1979 by Ida Florence Wright Crozier was only done more thoroughly on Daniel, 1st, 2nd and 3rd. Most of all the Daniels lines lived in Ontario Canada.

Thanks Sandra,
What a fascinating book about the origins of the name Fletcher and a history of those in the US. I am not aware of any US links just now especially back as far as the Pilgrim Fathers but it is definately something worth considering if I do make any progress there. I still have no further back that Robert Fletcher born approx 1811 Combwich, Somerset, UK who married Elizabeth born approx 1815 Puriton, Somerset. Robert was a sailor. Perhaps when time allows I will make more progress with a visit to the record office as there is nothing new on the websites I am signed up to. Thanks Alison
