Hello,
Hope some one can help us.
We are trying to trace the SYPHER family.
We have James SYPHER (22 yrs) marrying Ann (BARNELL) BARNETT (19 yrs) in Christian- Malford 13 July 1885 (marriage cert).
Also on Free BDM is a ? brother (assumed) a widower David Sypher who marries a widow Mary in 1856.
I can not find any other Syphers on the Free BDM site or the Wiltshire BDM site. Maybe I'm looking in all the wrong places! So, did they move into Whiltshire and marry or are there other Syphers in the area. James was listed as Syphen.
They are proving interesting to track here in Australia as well.
Thanks for any help
Cheers
Jenny

I don't see anything resembling a James SYPHER in any of the censuses but still looking...

Jenny,
If you are just looking for SYPHERs in Wiltshire in general, a few pop up on the censuses.
For example, in 1881 there are two, both living in Brinkworth, Wiltshire: Elizabeth SYPHER, 60, partly blind, a widow and farm labourer, born in Lea, Wiltshire; and Eliza SYPHER, 12, niece to William and Mary STRANGE, born in Brinkworth [reference: RG11/2026 Folio 5 Pages 18 and 4, respectively].
Going back to 1861: Elizabeth SYPHER, 39, is with her husband, John, 64, an agricultural labourer, and his son Thomas, 26, also an ag lab in Brinkworth, Wiltshire. John's birthplace is recorded as Somerford, Elizabeth's as Lea and Thomas's as Brinkworth [reference RG9/1277 Folio 23 Page 9].
There are considerably more CYPHERs in Wiltshire -- 30 listed for 1881, 28 for 1891 and 14 for 1901. But no SYPHERs or CYPHERs named James, unfortunately.
HTH,
Trish

Re Sypher
MAny Thanks Trish,
Certainly given us some leads to track. Some debate over the name here (Australia).
Not all chidren were registered - but the 1st reg. in queensland is 1860. which may be why they are not on many census returns??
Unbale to find shipping records yet for a definite date.
Once again thank you very much.

And there's a FreeBMD death index entry for presumably this Deborah if David re-married in 1856.
