Exclamation Unusual surnames including Grix, Dunnell, Bambridge

    Hello,

I have been researching my Norfolk family history for over 15 years and have quite a lot of information on a lot of different families -both my ancestors and their neighbours (and some complete strangers!).

    DUNNELL
Has anyone ever come across this name, anywhere? I seem to be one of only two people researching this surname and I would love to find a fellow researcher. Considering the amount of children the family produced, I rather hope there might be someone out there who has an interest. My family lived in Weston Longville and appear in church records from about 1685 through to the 1900s. The family is prominent in the diaries written by James Woodforde and published as 'Diary of a Country Parson' in the 1920s. The name was originally Dunning/Duning and there are monuments inside Weston church to this family. By the 1760s the name seems to have changed to Dunnell, although an ancestor who died in 1804 referred to ehrself as 'Dunnell alias Dunning' in her Will. The family may have some heritage in Mattishall Burgh, and is definately linked to the Dunnell family in Colton(being researched by a lady called Carol Day). One branch appears to have emigrated to the USA as Mormons, but I am still to verify the data gleaned from IGI.

    GRIX
My ancestors come from Marsham with some links to families in nearby Hevingham (not sure what the link is!). Before Marsham the family seem to have a link with Horstead and Horsford. Earlier, the family may have a link with Binham and a number of other coastal parishes. Variants can be Griggs and Griks.

    BAMBRIDGE
I love this family! My ancestors were in Stody and there were dozens of them, a very complicated tree (always fun!). Th researching this surname and I would love to find a fellow researcher. Other names:
BATES (Weston, Great Witchingham - descended from BETTS of Felthorpe?);GRAY (Weston, Lyng); ENGLEDOW (Weston, Lyng); BUCK (Weston, Honingham); SAYER (Newton Flotman, Saxlingham); MUSKETT (Saxlingham Nethergate); TABBLE (Lyng); REEVE (Lyng); HILL, JARVIS, BULLOCK, EKE, CARTER (Corpusty & Saxthorpe, Heydon, Wood Dalling); JACKSON (Edgefield). All quite a few of these when they migrated to the north east of England in the 19th century....

I look forward to hearing from anybody with links to any of the names or parishes mentioned.

    Default Thi/urtle, Horsford

    THI/URTLE
A real mystery involving my ancestor Charlotte Thurtle - who for years I thought was a BOOTY from Horsford. She was born THURTLE (where and to whom? She may have had a sister Susanna, who married her first husband's brother), married a BOOTY who promptly died just after their child John was born; she remarried to William JARVIS of Saxthrope, had a child (James William in 1825) and then died (aged 28 years) and was buried in Horsford.

Anything on this family or parish?

    Hi Rob,

I have an interest in two names in the same area. I have a Lydia Bambridge bn abt 1810 in Corpusty which is about 10k from Stody. I also have an Elizabeth Buck bn abt 1734 and marrying a John Riches in 1753 in Briston, NFK. I looked at the Briston film last year. I hope to look for the parents of Lydia Bambridge in the near future.

Lydia married Thomas Keeler of Oulton, NFK in 1830.

    Hello,

I am not sure where Lydia comes in. There is a Lydia bp 1797 but I have her as a child of George Bambridge and Sarah Waller. She either died in 1812 or perhaps emigrated in 1836. Neither of which fit your woman!

One reason whythis name intrigues me so much...Rob

Don't forget to check out the Norfolk surnames list at

Rob should be aware of it but it's easy to forget to check it on a regular basis.

    Default Thurtle/Thurtell in Horsford

So, in the 1841 cenus for Horsford I find John Booty aged '15' an ag. labourewr, quite likely the son of Charlotte Booty nee Thurtle and later Jarvis; he is living with a Henry Buck '60', miller, and an Ann Thurtell, '70'. Could this Ann be mother to my Charlotte?
