Hello
I am researching the family of Duncan Hughes born 1750 in Kingoldrum, Angus. He married Mary Morrison in North Carolina in 1799. He died in 1838. The IGI says his father was Thomas Hew.
Thank you, Roger

Hi Roger
A very useful book for giving you the background to your ancestors' lives is "Angus Country Life - A Companion to the Angus Folk Museum, Glamis", by Hugh Cheape & Gavin Sprott. It was published 1980 for the National Trust for Scotland, so I do not know if it is still in print. My copy has no ISBN number. The museum is well worth a visit if you ever get the chance. It is in a row of old cottages with rooms recreated using original items.

Do you know if the Forfar Library can answer queries by email regarding IGI etc.? I went ahead and emailed a query: "Thomas Hew was Duncan's father. I am trying to find dates of birth, marriage and or death for Thomas."

Hi Roger
It is over a year since I went to the library at Forfar, but they had a computer suite then. Give them as much info as possible. The staff were very helpful when I went there to research my dad's family. My mum & dad used to do family history research there years ago, & when my husband & I last went, the girl at the desk recognised me, because I take after my dad. Sadly my dad (William Robertson) died a couple of months's ago, but my sister & I still have a flat in Forfar.
If you have any dates from the IGI, give the full details. I often do lookups for Liverpool & if you have the IGI details they can be quick to do. What takes ages is if someone only has vague details of a date. The place name is essential. According to GENUKI there was a church at Kingoldrum, but what records there are I do not know. The IGI has a marriage at Lintrathen which is a possibility.
Good hunting

This is the email reply I got today from the library in Forfar.

We have confirmed that the IGI entry for Duncan Hew's baptism is 10 December 1750. We could supply you with a transcription of the actual entry from the Old Parish Registers (OPR's) as part of a commissioned research. Other sources we could search include the Pre-1855 Gravestone Inscriptions of Angus for the Kingoldrum area, the Kingoldrum OPR burial entries 1747-1854, North America/Canada passenger list information up to 1915 on CD Rom and the various local history books and indexes relating to Kingoldrum whmessage=We have confirmed that the IGI entry for Duncan Hew's baptism is 10 December 1750. Details of the research service are given below.
Angus Archives offers a genealogy research service costing £20 per hour with an administration fee of £1.50 and VAT (local tax calculated at 17.5%) added to the overall charge. The number of hours researched is entirely at the discretion of the client, although we usually recommend that new clients begin with a two hour search as this enables us to begin research and assess the number of sources we could research at a future date. Payment is made by pound sterling cheque made payable to "Angus Council" either before research has begun or once research has been completed and the client has received an invoice. An alternative method of payment would be to telephone the Meffan Museum on 01307 464123, quote your customer and invoice number from your invoice and then proceed although we usually recommend that new clients begin with a two hour search as this enables us to begin research and assess the number of sources we could research at a future date.
