when I came across 2 marriages, same district, same quarter with identical groom's name, I sent for copies of both certificates. I could think of another way of working out which one was mine. Even the bride's had the same first name.

    Welcome to British-Genealogy dalzell

You have posted this query in the WW11 forum so are you trying to locate a WW11 service record for an ancestor?
If so then this sticky explains who has them, how to apply, who can apply and what paperwork and information you will need.

gtgrandfather, grandfather and uncle all have same name and initials. So some WW1, WW2 army stuff would be good to find. I think I have found uncle in WW2 but nothing else. They were all also born at the same place.

As Christina has explained, you apply to MoD for WW2 service records.

For WW1, you haven't said what services (army, navy) you're looking for so choose the appropriate research guide from here
