Followed Peter Goodey's suggestion - the 1911 census shows that he was proprietor rather than employee.
    In that case...

    • Trade directories certainly.
    • Electoral registers - he'd have a business vote.
    • Any references in the CRO catalogue?
    • Council rating records.
    • If he had a business to bequeath try probate records.
    • Local press - adverts or other mentions.

Not all these are likely to be online of course. Real research required!

I take your point about 'real research'; what I have been trying to do so far is clear the ground, assemble the facts that can be traced online before such real digging. I'm only just getting back into FH research after quite some time; I have a shortlist of problems that have so far eluded me, and this thread comes from my determination to find out what became of three missing siblings of my grandmother, and to try to determine whether they had issue. So far I have been unable to find the undertaker sibling after 1914 (a trade directory). I have several threads to follow, several of which have been suggested by helpful people online, such as yourself.
