Default LEWIS LYONS 1799-1873-FRANCES LEVI 1793-1888

This new thread provides data on Lewis Lyons 1799-1873 and his wife Frances Levi 1793-1888 and their children. The thread should be read in conjunction with an earlier thread "John Levey 1812-1858-Gertrude Lyons 1812-1891" with particular respective to Gertrude Levey nee Lyons. Subsequent contact via this forum with another descendant of John Levey and Gertude Lyons has provided new data on the lines with specific information on the parents and siblings of Gertrude Lyons.
In British Census records Gertrude Levey wife of John Levey place of birth was recorded as Bristol but initial searches provided no confirmation that Bristol was the correct origin. However, subsequent data has indicated that this was correct. There was also no data to indicate who Gertrude's parents or siblings were. Various correspondence between myself and the descendant of John and Gertrude has provided data to confirm Gertrude's parents.

The 1841 British Census HO 107 573 1 -Johnson St? Market St Manchester Lancashire ( Crown Copyright,TNA) shows Lewis Lyons with his wife and family:
Lewis Lyons 40 Pencil Dealer b Foreign Parts; Frances Lyons 40 b Foreign Parts; Abraham Lyons b Foreign Parts; Frederick Lyons 15 b Foreign Parts; Benjamin Lyons 14 b in county; Jacob Lyons 8 b in county; Phebe Lyons 12 b in county; Bella Lyons 5 b in county
    Ages over 15 rounded to the nearest 5 years - 53-becomes 50

I will post on the family who emigrated to America in subsequent posts including US Census and other data.
The London Gazette Bankruptcy records 21 Feb 1826 recorded:
Lewis Lyons late of Birmingham Warwickshire Dealer in quills, feathers, pencils and sponge, formerly of Glasgow in Scotland. Dealer in quills, feathers and pencils and thereafter of BRISTOL Somersetshire dealer in jewellery and quills.
The Making of Manchester Jewry 1740-1875 Bill Williams,1985 ( Google Books snippet) recorded.."In the late 1820s Lewis LYON (of London) established a quill warehouse in Withy Grove; soon afterwards he became a special constable of the town in which capacity in Jan 1833 he arrested the receiver of one thousand stolen quills".

    Further data to follow.
