    Though I do have to slightly disagree with Peter about buying the birth certificate.
    I agree with you disagreeing with me in the general run of things. I haven't bought certificates for everyone in my tree. It all depends on how seriously interested one is in someone (or in someone who might be mentioned in a certificate).

    Sorry for the delay in replying. Busy week!
    I haven't ordered John's birth certificate because I'm pretty certain the birth index I have for him is the correct one and on the basis that I have certificates for three of his brothers and he is mentioned in the records of Barnardo's. He did have a brother named Augustus (Augustus David Ashburton Dunning) for whom I have the birth certificate.
    The probate registry is one I haven't come across before and getting his will may be a better option than his birth certificate if, as you say, he didn't emigrate. I know one of the brothers did do so.
    Phew this is complicated!
