    Default G.R.

Hi. Ive just found a distant relative who was a Coroner Officer for Shoreditch 1900-1901. After his name HENRY BENNETT he has G.R. Does anyone know what G.R. stands for.
    Thank You Teresa

Unlikely, I think. The hierarchy in the registration service goes from Registrar to Superintendent Registrar to Registrar General - and there's only one of those in the whole of England and Wales.

I wonder if G might be for Guardian of something, or if R might be to do with Rates (both of these are connected with local government) - but I don't recall the phrase "Guardian of the Rates". Is the "G.R." in a copy of an original handwritten document, or is it a later transcript, and therefore possibly the result of a misreading?

Perhaps the 'R' was actually a 'P' for General practitioner?

probably not :"HENRY BENNETT (37, G.R.) I am Coroner's officer for the parish of Shoreditch"
M.D. is the usual term for a Doctor.

    Government /Recorder/Respondent/ Reporter?

Aha! Thanks Wendy. The GR seems to come from the oldbaileyonline site

    https://www.oldbaileyonline.org/brows...=t19010225-205

Is 37 his age? The following witness has Inspector NSPCC after his name, so perhaps the GR refers to his employers

Lower down on the page that Sue found is:
    BENJAMIN MORGAN (Police Inspector, G.)

Might this refer to the police station he worked at? But if so, that still doesn't explain "G.R."

    So I googled this:
Initials G.R. for a court officer, what are they?

    G.R. No. 198113 - The Lawphil Project
G.R. No. 190321 - Supreme Court of the Philippines
Rule for Certifying Professional Guardians - Washington ...

GR 23 Rule for Certifying Professional Guardians (a) Purpose and Scope

Washington State Courts - Court Rules

(2) After making its initial determinations, the Supreme Court shall forward ..... a part of the rule once GR 16 was adopted, they continued to be published in ..

Seems like a governmental order/registration/rule. One of us must know some-one with connections!
