Does anyone recognise this couple please :
William Briggs married a Catherine Briggs in Liverpool September 1871.
From the 1881 census onwardsthey are living in Cumberland although William has died by the 1891.
They were a family of Butchers.
A daughter Flora Briggs born Liverpool (as was her brother John W) married into my Whitfield family.
Regards, Pauline

Pauline,
Did a BRIGGS really marry another BRIGGS? Just wondering if this is a typo or they actually had the same surname...

I do not know if you have the marriage certificate yet, but I had a look at it today at the library. I don't envy you trying to sort them out!

William & Catherine
Hi Pauline,
This couple married in Liverpool but according to the 1881 census they were both born in Cumberland. I think this will be them both in 1861:-
Tallentire, Cumberland, RG9/3940 Folio 16 Page 8
William Briggs, Head 52 Farmer Born Cumberland, Bootle
Catherine, Wife 48 Born Loweswater, Cum.
William, Son 25 Born Lamplugh, Cum.
Jane, Dau. 20 Born Tallentire, Cum.
Robert, Son 14 Born Tallentire
George, Son 12 Born Tallentire
Catherine, Dau. 10 Born Tallentire
Wilson Harrison, Son 8 Born Tallentire
Sarah Ann, Dau. Born Tallentire
George, Brother, 40 Unm. Born Bootle
Tallentire, Cumberland. RG9/3940 Folio 15 Page 5
In the home of Robert Workman, a Farmer and his family
William Briggs. Servt. 12 Cow Boy Born Loweswater, Cumberland.
I don't know if there was any relationship between the families but they are living very close to each other in 1861. The fact William is a servant at 12 suggests he is an orphan. There was also a housekeeper named Mary Briggs, unmarried aged 35 in the same house. Note Catherine had a brother Robert, the probable witness at the marriage. In 1881 Catherine gives her birth place as Bridekirk, it's the next village to Tallentire. William gives his as Brigham, a few miles north of Loweswater, but if he was orphaned at an early age it's doubtful he would know where he was born exactly.
Cheers, Jeremy.Last edited by jeeb; 02-09-2005 at 1:39 AM.
