Yes, many of "my" family tree were ag. labourers too who didn't tend towards leaving wills or having anything probated! And I can sympathize with having the surname of "Smith" to have to trace. I thought VANSTONE would be easy. I mean, not as common as "Smith" is it so SHOULD be easy enough?? WELL!!! They're all over the place in Devon, can't keep them still in one place! And they all love the names John, Mary, Benjamin, Roger, Tristram etc. so back until the mid-1700's when a ancestor creatively named their kid Joseph, things are a real muddle! So, when I'm having a rotten day trying to find the Vanstone I need, I'll just remember YOUR toils and consider myself lucky that the surname isn't Smith (or Jones!)
