Default Hylands Military Hospital, [WW1] Chelmsford

    Hi

We are researching the soldiers who were treated/died at Hylands House [near Chelmsford] during WW1, when it was a military hospital. We have found the soldiers below -

L/Cpl George Alexander Joseph, Black Watch, died 14 November 1914
Pte Karel Louis Joseph Steylmans, Belgian Guards, died 9 April 1915
Pte Joseph Watt [also known as Inglis], Gordon Highlanders, died 15 May 1917
Pte Louis Carl Albert Hopp, Australian Infantry, died 23 January 1918
Pte George Henry Gough, Canadian Infantry, died 4 February 1918

Frederick Edward Johnson, Essex Regiment and Scottish Rifles, MM [from Widford]
Cpl Samuel John Barrow, Australian Army, MM presented September 1917 in the hospital by Lady Gooch
Cpl John MacKinnon, Cameron Highlanders, MM presented September 1917 in the hospital by Lady Gooch
Pte B Galloghly [Golloghly] Cameron Highlanders, last patient, in the hospital April 1919

If anyone knows any more about any of these men, or knows of any others [there were 1000 men through the hospital in 4 years], please let me know - [email protected].

    Thank you

    Linda

    HI Linda

Australian service records are at NAA-
Google National Archives Australia or go here - https://naa12.naa.gov.au/LogonNoSession.htm - click on here, pick guest, do Namesearch and put in Surname, pick WW1 from dropdown list and narrow down list to find them.

    Hello Robert

Thank you so much - I have some information from Australia about Louis Hopp and Samuel John Barrow from the Australian Memorial, but I shall definitely look at the Archives. What a wonderful forum - I have had letters in the local papers, and pleas for help in the newsletters for various local organisations, but the speedy response from this site is fantastic.

    kind regards

    Linda

    Hi

Thank you for your quick response - it is possible that one of the trees is mine - I haven't given all my soldiers trees, but the ones from the hospital have trees, as I am ever hopeful of finding living family who may have a photograph!

    with kind regards
