    Default RAF squadrons ???

I have a letter from my grandad to his mother, in 1919, with his squadron as 111 squadron, a later photo shows him with 23 fighter squadron at Biggin Hill 1932... how do the squadrons work?
Did air personal choose which squadron to move to, were they selected in some way?
Any info would be gratefully received 😃

Not sure about the early RAF, but currently each squadron/unit/station have an establishment and personal are posted there to fill a specific role.
For example, 1 plane require 1 pilot, 2 start up crew, engine fitter, armourer, instrument fitter.
roles and numbers are an example and not definite roles/numbers.

    Welcome to Brit Gen.

RAF squadrons are not the same as army regiments - people move around as needed and might spend a few years on one base, and then move on to where they've needed, depending on their speciality and skills.

Your best bet would be to apply for a copy of his service record. Have a look HERE for information about doing it.
