    I found it on Ancestry using the parameters mentioned above.

    34 Clerk Street, Edinburgh St Cuthberts. Parents Walter & Mary. Walter is a commercial traveller (drapers). Robert's an Upholsterer (Apprentice).

    I don't undertsand Scottish references but Ancestry says Edinburgh St Cuthberts; ED: 32; Page: 29; Line: 5; Roll: cssct1881_292.

    Edinburgh has multiple parishes, St Cuthbert's is/was one of them.

    I have traced census returns for all those available ie 1871,1881,1891,1901 and 1911 and he is always an upholsterer.
    How were people drafted for the Victorian conflicts, for example. Were they volunteers, career soldiers or conscripted?
    The reason I am on this tack is simply family history that he was, at some time ,in India.
